25 Years of KINDness in the Classroom
KIND News is celebrating 25 years of teaching
children the importance of treating people, animals, and
the environment with kindness and respect. Our
award-winning classroom newspaper has undergone a lot of
changes since 1983, but our message to children has not
changed. Reminisce with our fun and historical facts!
25 KIND News Fun Facts
1. The first feature article published
was “New Help for Elderly and Handicapped Pet Owners”
in September 1983.
2. Filbert the inchworm preceded the current hidden creature,
Camille the chameleon.
3. If you collected Critter Cards from the first issue
of
KIND News until now, you’d have 498!
4. Riddle Rat joined
KIND News in November 1986 as
Tickle Rat’s Puzzle.
5. “How do dogs and cats know when to shed?” was the
first question Dr. Kind answered!
6. The first celebrity
featured in
KIND News was Mr. T., of "The
A-Team," for his involvement in saving wild
horses.

KIND News “Primary” edition was added later and first
published in September 1993.

KIND News went online in 1997.

KIND News teacher surveys, 90% of teachers

KIND News home with their students.
10. The Adopt-a-Classroom program started in 1985 (it
was originally called Adopt-a-Teacher).

12. The first KIND Club featured was HEART (Help
Endangered Animals-Ridley Turtles). They wrote to
President Reagan and also raised money to feed baby
Ridley turtles in a special captive breeding program in
Texas.

for a school
year's subscription in September 1990.
14. The most popular column for kids is the Critter
Card Cutouts.
