25 Years of KINDness in the Classroom

KIND News is celebrating 25 years of teaching children the importance of treating people, animals, and the environment with kindness and respect. Our award-winning classroom newspaper has undergone a lot of changes since 1983, but our message to children has not changed. Reminisce with our fun and historical facts!

1. The first feature article published was “New Help for Elderly and Handicapped Pet Owners” in September 1983.

2. Filbert the inchworm preceded the current hidden creature, Camille the chameleon.

3. If you collected Critter Cards from the first issue of KIND News until now, you’d have 498!

4. Riddle Rat joined KIND News in November 1986 as Tickle Rat’s Puzzle.

5. “How do dogs and cats know when to shed?” was the first question Dr. Kind answered!

6. The first celebrity featured in KIND News was Mr. T., of "The A-Team," for his involvement in saving wild horses.

7. KIND News “Primary” edition was added later and first published in September 1993.

8. KIND News went online in 1997.

9. According to our KIND News teacher surveys, 90% of teachers send KIND News home with their students.

10. The Adopt-a-Classroom program started in 1985 (it was originally called Adopt-a-Teacher).

11. KIND News is published in a log cabin in East Haddam, Connecticut.

12. The first KIND Club featured was HEART (Help Endangered Animals-Ridley Turtles). They wrote to President Reagan and also raised money to feed baby Ridley turtles in a special captive breeding program in Texas.

13. KIND News went from five issues to nine issues for a school year's subscription in September 1990.

14. The most popular column for kids is the Critter Card Cutouts.

15. KIND News has been in 25% of U.S. schools since its inception!

16. Two hundred million students have received KIND News in the past 25 years!

17. Dr. Kind has received more than 6,000 questions since her column first appeared in KIND News.

18. More than 3,800 kids have been featured in KIND News!

19. One favorite celebrity featured was Kermit the Frog for his message of keeping animals out of science fair projects.

20. Bill Cosby was featured in an early issue of KIND News for starting a group of actors who speak up for animals.

21. Dr. Kind lives in Washington, DC.

22. Observ-ant became Adventure Ant in September 1993 in the Primary edition.

23. Among teachers who use KIND News, 82% report that it has improved their students’ treatment of one another (according to our KIND News teacher surveys).

24. KIND News is the most widely used humane education resource.

25. KIND News has received 14 APEX Awards for Publication Excellence.
